Who We Are

Chionesu Bakari Program for Young Men, is a mentoring & rites of passage program that has helped guide over 300 young black males from the ages of 8 – 18 through it’s Rites of Passage Program. Chionesu Bakari takes young men out of their comfort zone and opens up their world perspectives, guiding their development to the leaders they were born to be.

We are proud of our Young Men and our success. Chionesu Bakari boasts a 100% high school graduation rate, with 96% of those young men currently enrolled in colleges/universities across the country.

Chionesu Bakari, a Swahili phrase meaning “Guiding Light of Noble Promise”, is engaged in the ministry of saving and developing young black males by reclaiming, renaming, renewing and reconditioning their minds. We strive to motivate young black male children to think critically and prepare their minds and the minds of their respective parents/guardians for the men they will grow to become.

Your Support Provides a Year-Round Mentor for a Young Man

  • The guidance, discipline, and faithfulness of CB has brought me to a place of comfort in how my son is being raised. A man is another man’s brother and sometimes you need your brothers more than your mother.

    Vanessa Paugh - CB Parent
  • Chionesu Bakari has not only benefited my son but me as well. For my son, it has provided a brotherhood. For me a network of other parents to whom which I can come to for guidance and support with parenting a young, black man in today’s society.

Deirdra Smith - CB Alumni Parent
  • To me, this program is my second family. I can talk to anyone about anything and I can ask for prayer if I need it. We joke together, learn together, eat together, and stand together. I hope this program will never stop. I love it.

Rennie Coburn - CB Alum, Rites of Passage Graduate 2013
