The Chionesu Bakari Program for Young Men also includes a mandatory parent/guardian component where parents are required to attend workshops, seminars, and retreats that provide new strategies that can be used in the parenting of his/her developing son. This component is the parent Institute.
The parents/guardians of the The Chionesu Bakari Parent Institute, come together twice a month to participate in interactive workshops, gather program information, network, and examine real life situations that affect their young men and their families. Workshop topics holistically engage parents/guardians as individuals and as parents. Topics have included, reflecting on past parental relationships, understanding communication styles, discipline methods that work best, having courageous conversations about race, sex, etc., and encouraging the highest potential for your son. This component of the program exists to provide enrichment, to build community within, and to establish a network of resources for the parents/guardians. This space is where trust is built, solutions are provided, and the Chionesu Bakari community is cultivated through positive relationship development.
Parents/Guardians meet on the first and third Thursday of each month 6:45 pm – 8:30 pm from October to June. Full day sessions on Saturdays are scheduled periodically throughout the year. Parents also meet during the summer months while the young men are in session.
