Our Story

Rites Of Passage

“Going through the ROP process has made the bond between my ROP brothers stronger. [We] have learned to work together, make decisions together, stick together and trust each other. We are ready to be men, independent not dependent.”-Shareif Daniels- Chionesu Bakari Rites Of Passage Alum, Johnson C. Smith, NC

The Chionesu Bakari Rites of Passage Program marks the transition from Young Man to Manhood. This is the process where there is a realization of the vision and mission of Chionesu Bakari – having reclaimed, renamed, renewed and reconditioned the mind of the young man. The process includes cultural understanding and exemplary acknowledgement of brotherhood, self-sacrifice, leadership, and college readiness by the candidates.

The Rites of Passage experience is a year-long initiation for young men ages 16-18.  It is the culmination of our process that moves from Pauper to Warrior to Prince phase and includes 12 real-life capstone assignments that test the knowledge of all that was taught in the three prior phases. The Rites of Passage candidates are guided by their male mentors from within Chionesu Bakari organization and members of the community. The completion of this process is an indication of a readiness to personally and inwardly transition to manhood, as witnessed by peers and mentors.

We are proud to say that 100% of our Rites of Passage Graduates become ambassadors of the program, College leaders, or Community Advocates in their own communities.  In this way, both the Community and the YoungMen benefit from the development achieved through the CB Rites of Passage Program.

Parents, community elders, Chionesu Bakari alumni, and Chionesu Bakari members, all play an important part in this process, as they provide guidance and encouragement.  Likewise, the young men acknowledge their readiness to become men, collegiates, leaders, and responsible members of the community. 100% of our Rites of Passage graduates become ambassadors of the program, college leaders, and advocates in their own communities benefiting both the community and themselves.
